The Attraction
What part of us
is this thing happening to?
If I were a true romantic
I would say it was the heart.
But the heart is just
a famous organ,
a pump for human blood
and nothing more.
It's not the brain
that houses the mind,
which can intellectualize anything.
Nor the eyes, which are
the windows to the soul.
Nor any of our
physical parts alone.
It must be, then,
the spirit of our beings--
our gentle inner entities
that slip away,
connecting
on some intermittent plain.
How else would we explain
this ethereal feeling?
The energy passing between us.
The visual communication
without words.
The secret knowing,
the reaching.
The incredible fulfillment I feel
when looking at you.
Electricity
growing in our presence
can no longer be measured;
no meter has yet been invented
that can read this power.
It fills the room,
wraps us in resonance,
flows across the distance
in our lives
and lifts us up—
our spirits meeting
high above the crowds,
positively charged
and intensifying
one stolen moment
at a time.
As long as we continue
not to touch each other often,
we will be safe;
the pressure gauge
keeping
our chemistry
contained.
For if our bodies
were ever allowed
to totally
connect,
they would surely explode...
